Calfiornia Wildfire Pictures October 2007
Here are some pictures I took to document my experience as the wildfires of October 2007 were impacting lives all across Southern California. The pictures were taken in Newport Beach, CA on the Balboa Peninsula where I live.
Finally on Monday I saw this "view from space" map on ABC news which gave me a clearer idea of what was really going on here in Southern California. Note the red arrow and how it shows the streams of smoke from space - it was a clear day otherwise, so that there white flowing bank was smoke from the fires and it was flowing out to sea directly over Newport Beach and some other coastal communities. They showed a time lapse which really put it in perspective... it was flowing very abrubtly with winds up to 50 and 70 mph blowing out to sea... What was so unique is that the plumes of smoke were concentrated like a tunnel of air, not spread out as with Malibu up North. That explains why it looked so intense as I watched a dark brown cloud of smoke on pass by me right overhead on Sunday when it first started. Nasty stuff and it was concentrated right here where I live... arghhh!
I snapped a few pictures on Monday morning to document how it felt. Normally the sky is clear and the air is clean. The clouds you see are smoke - not fog - it was clear and no clouds or fog other than the junk from the fires.

It was windy and there was a heaviness to the air. This was MUCH better than the night before when I walked Milo, but was still pretty nasty.
It looks like the "Day After" a big bomb went off. The closest "wildfire" is in Irvine, CA but the smoke blew right over us.
Normally the sun would be so bright, and not in a haze of toxic pollution.
