Breathing wood smoke is unhealthy

Can you spare the air for a brother?

Breathing wood smoke is unhealthy. If your home is smoking it is time to quit.

There are commercials on Spotify from that are running that really strike a chord with me.

spare the air of wood smokeI live in the San Francisco Bay Area and for some reason this part of the country seems to be consumed with burning wood. If it gets a little cold or rainy the air is suddenly saturated with a strong burning smoke smell.

Then the news and weather programs warn us with ALERTS to STAY INSIDE and “SPARE THE AIR” by not burning wood. It’s that bad. The air pollution is at an unhealthy level.

When I used to drive up from Los Angeles and I would get close to the bay area I could always start to smell the smoke burning.

Sorry – but I just don’t like smoke. I stopped smoking cigarettes and do my best to avoid pollution whenever I can so it upsets me when there are people that are just blasting this burnt wood smoke into our air.

I guess a lot of it is just fireplaces – trying to be cozy and romantic – and a lot of it is people trying to save money by burning wood in stoves etc.

It’s just not good for our health.

As the commercial says – it’s time for your home to quit smoking.

Spare The Air

When a Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect, it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs, pellets, or any other solid fuels in your fireplace, woodstove or outdoor fire pit.
During the winter season, wood smoke is the largest source of harmful particulate pollution. On this website, residents can find information about the health effects of wood smoke, as well as detailed information about the Wood Burning Rule and how to comply with it.

More info about wood smoke:

Wood smoke contains fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases such as nitrogen oxides that can scar the lungs.

Smoke may smell good, but it’s not good for you. Wood smoke can affect everyone, but children, teenagers, older adults, people with lung disease, including asthma and COPD or people with heart diseases are the most vulnerable.

The Fireplace Deulusion

There is no amount of wood smoke that is good to breathe. It is at least as bad for you as cigarette smoke, and probably much worse.

Because wood is a natural material and has been an integral part of human existence for so long, many view it as a benign, cheap and renewable energy alternative. But wood smoke can exacerbate asthma symptoms, and is especially harmful to children and older people. The emissions also have been linked to respiratory disease, atherosclerosis and other coronary problems, and early deaths among people with cardiovascular or lung disease.
