Life in Laguna Beach, California
Apr 28th, 2008 by Mike
Today - April 28th, 2008 - is pretty hot although not as hot as yesterday. It hit the 90’s here in Laguna Beach yesterday and that’s unheard of in April. It’s in the 80’s today which is still hot for here by the ocean, but hey – it’s tolerable!
My friend Lorraine said the polar icecaps are melting. Uh oh…
I guess it’s a good thing I am 4 blocks from the beach and NOT right on the ocean! That way if the water rises I’ll still be in a good place.
Of course I hope that is not true, but hey – who knows! Crazy stuff happens in this world and I would not be too surprised if the climate changes and that affects people.
The good news is that while I am complaining about it hitting the 90’s yesterday is that we did not have it as bad as other areas in Southern California as many areas hit the 100’s and even up to 110! Yipes! That’s insane!
Not long ago I lived in Sherman Oaks and that kind of hot weather was not uncommon. Here at the beach however we expect it to be close to 70 most of the time. It’s quite a shocker to jump into the 80’s or 90’s.
Even with the hot weather it feels good to be so close to Summer weather! Spring is here and the bugs are going nuts. Man, I had a bout with some huge insane moths. These guys are super intelligent compared to yor average moth and they are huge and bullet proof. I found that my fly swatter was not suited to the challeng of swatting these massive loyud obnoxious moths. They seem to have a sophisticated radar system and when you swat they dive bomb you and it’s nearly impossible to hit them. Combine this with the fact they are impossible to kill and you have a frenzied situation like I did last night when I was trying to watch the season finale of Big Brother 9.
These crazy bugs were fluttering about and making noise and I went nuts myself trying to get them! I corned one and actually smashed it with the swatter. Guess what - it gets up and flies away. That’s after hearing it squish… argh… and forget about swatting them. It has no impact whatsover. You can’t swat them to death.
The only solution is to stun them enough to get them to stay still and you must smash them with no mercy.
Crazy huh??? Who’d expect giant bug stories here by the ocean in Socal???
At least we don’t have it too bad with the mosquitoes! I grew up in Chicago and those things were really pesky!
And that’s my environmental report from the coast of Southern California!
